Decision time

  • How to love an old ERP system
  • Just enough project management

Thinking out loud

  • Why learning from experience isn't
  • How to succeed by accident
  • The deep reasons behind project failure

Advanced Planning – Short Shelf Life Food ( UK )

Advanced Planning system snippet imageThis was one of the implementation projects, arising from a system selection exercise, described here. This privately-owned company had previously used relatively simple tools to plan and schedule a complex production environment. The planners were forced to make many judgemental tradeoffs under great time pressure, with inevitably mixed results.

The requirements were on the limits of complexity for a mid-range AP system, for a variety of reasons:

  • An extreme combination of short shelf lives, volatile demand and complex multi-stage manufacturing processes
  • A wide range of equipment with different process types, batch size ranges, and setup / changeover characteristics
  • Many alternate processing routes, any of which might be appropriate in some circumstances

Syncresis provided detailed assistance with many activities, including:

  • Developing the logic of the planning model
  • Investigation of the reasons for model behaviour, and tuning of the model
  • Specification and testing of interfaces to the BPCS 6.1 ERP system
  • Definition of the planning process and its constituent procedures
